I always look at polls, look at journals if I feel up to it, and I generally skim and immediately delete status updates.
As for notices in the description, it depends on how ambitious I'm feeling. I open almost every deviation that comes into my notifications, but I don't always read the description unless I'm curious about something related to the art.
